I’m drawn to trees that are grand—those that often stand alone, commanding attention. Trees that seem as if they could tell a story, that have lived long, rich lives and witnessed the passage of time. Trees that are undeniably beautiful, sometimes with an air of mystery or quiet haunting.

While photographing Trees in Marsh, I had a close encounter with a family of beavers who made it very clear I wasn’t welcome in their pond. As I floated quietly in my flimsy inflatable raft, they surrounded me, slapping their tails on the water with surprising force. It was a bit unnerving—2 a.m., alone on a remote pond deep in the woods, with only the dark water and the beavers for company.
